Price Elasticity

How much demand changes when a price changes, a key measure for pricing decisions.

What is it?

What is Price Elasticity?

Price elasticity of demand measures the percentage change in quantity demanded in response to a 1% change in price. Elastic products (|PED|>1) see big demand swings with price changes; inelastic products (|PED|<1) barely change. Every pricing decision should be informed by an elasticity estimate.

Real-World Example

A coffee shop raises espresso from $3.00 to $3.30 (10% increase). Daily orders drop from 100 to 94 (6% drop). PED = -0.6 (inelastic). Revenue increases: 94 ร— $3.30 = $310.20 vs. original $300. The price increase was profitable.

How It Works

This pricing metric is tracked by establishing a measurement baseline, defining the data sources required, and building a regular reporting cadence. Pricing teams monitor this metric at the category, channel, and SKU level to identify opportunities and early warning signals of margin erosion.
