Price Skimming

Launching at a high price to capture premium customers first, then gradually reducing price over time.

What is it?

What is Price Skimming?

Price skimming sets a high introductory price to extract maximum revenue from early adopters (who have the highest willingness to pay), then progressively lowers the price to attract more price-sensitive segments. It's the inverse of penetration pricing and works best for innovative products with little initial competition.

Real-World Example

When the iPhone launched in 2007 at $599, it was skimming. After 3 months, Apple cut the price to $399 to reach the next segment. PS5 launched at $499 and Sony harvested early adopter premium before supply normalized and prices dropped.

How It Works

Price skimming begins by identifying the maximum price a segment of early adopters will pay. This price is maintained until that segment is saturated, then systematically reduced to attract successive layers of more price-sensitive buyers. The timing of each price reduction is informed by sales velocity data and demand curve analysis.

Key Benefits

Maximizes revenue from early adopters willing to pay a premium

Recoups R&D and launch costs faster

Allows price reductions to be used as a marketing event

Risks and Considerations

High initial prices attract competitors quickly. Price drops can frustrate early adopters who paid full price (see Apple's $200 price cut on the first iPhone). Requires a truly differentiated product to sustain the premium.
